Costa Rica, even as a small country compared to its neighbors, is full of experiences and sightings you might not get anywhere else. So, before you come here, for whatever reason it may be, you should keep these facts into account.



1. Costa Rica is the home to nearly 6% of the world's biodiversity. 
The country's geographical position serves as an ecological bridge for thousands of species of animals.
















2. Costa Rica's marine area is bigger than its land area.
At 580,000 km2, Costa Rica's waters are almost 10 times bigger than the country's land area, measured at 52,100 km2.


















3. There are over 121 identifiable volcanic formations in Costa Rica.
As part of the Pacific Ring Fire Circle, Costa Rica has six officially active volcanoes and at least 61 formations with signs of volcanic activity.















4. 52 species of hummingbirds call Costa Rica their home
You can visit several gardens just a couple of hours from the capital, in these, you could see up to 26 of the 52 species of hummingbirds that inhabit Costa Rica.





















5. More than 25% of Costa Rica's territory is protected national parks and refuges.

Costa Rica's territory measures 51,100 km2, Lake Michigan has an area of 58,000 km2.
















7. 300 stone spheres found in Costa Rica are one of Central America's biggest mystery. 
Found in Diquis Delta and on Isla del Caño, these mysterious stones have fascinated visitors and puzzled Costa Ricans regarding their origins.
















8. Costa Rica hasn´t had a national army since 1948.
Contributing to its high ratings in population's happiness, Costa Ricans take a lot of pride in being one of few countries without a standing army.



















9. Costa Rica's literacy rates are one of the highest globaly.
Almost everyone living in Costa Rica has access to free basic education, which ensures a literacy rate of 97.8%.



















10. "Pura Vida" has become a trademark for the country.
It can mean anything from, "Hi", "Thanks", "How are you?"; but it's mostly just a happy expression that Costa Ricans use.
